The artist creates a fictional flag for an international socialist republic formed by Hikikomori and NEET deserters, alluding to the creation of a nation with a people and a cultural identity—united by a sense of inadequacy but without land or a sense of homeland, which defines its fluid nature, and, of course, without an army.
The decision to lay the flag on the floor, as well as the title of the work, references a common expression in Gen Z internet culture: LDAR, an acronym for Lay Down And Rot. In memetic language, "Rotting" is a form of abandonment, a surrender often accompanied by activities that ensure a high dopamine release, such as doomscrolling.
The partial invisibility of the flag, due to the fog constantly emanated from the smoke machine connected to the box, reflects the fact that these deserters form a "hidden movement", one whose numbers are underestimated and whose members often do not appear to the world in human form but as usernames on Reddit, 4chan, and other forums. Moreover, since these individuals wish to remain invisible or silent, avoiding exposure (as in the case of Hikikomori), it would be disrespectful and inappropriate to display an imaginary flag meant to represent them in some way.
The choice of invisibility is also an attempt to avoid the commodification of symbols belonging to movements whose very essence lies in being impossible to monetize, as they are inactive and unproductive.
The idea of creating a fictional flag is a reference to a trend that exploded on Reddit, where users create their own states, designing flags and imagining their history, population, GDP, territorial extent, and so on.
The work addresses desertion as the only political act that cannot be capitalized upon.
One’s home as the last place where it is possible to escape the extortion of the labor market.
The concepts of state and institution act as a provocation in continuity with Pour En Finir Avec Le Travail, where the reference to an armed force for desertion—an army for the defense against the expropriation of minds and bodies by late capitalism—has a paradoxical function, alluding to the rampant militarism and violent repression employed by political institutions in the contemporary world.
